At 211 Main Hall & Gardens, we believe in the power and strength of women. As a female-owned and operated wedding venue, we are deeply honored to celebrate women every day, and especially on their most special day, their wedding day. On International Women’s Day, we reflect on the incredible journey of women throughout history and the significance of this empowering day.
The History and Origin of International Women’s Day
International Women’s Day (IWD) is celebrated every year on March 8th. The origins of this day can be traced back to the early 20th century, at a time when women were fighting for their rights and striving for equality. The first official International Women’s Day was observed in 1911, inspired by the activism of women in Europe and America.
The seeds of this movement were planted in 1908 when 15,000 women marched through New York City demanding shorter working hours, better pay, and voting rights. This powerful demonstration led to the first National Women’s Day in the United States, celebrated on February 28, 1909. The movement quickly gained momentum, and in 1910, at the second International Conference of Working Women in Copenhagen, a woman named Clara Zetkin proposed the idea of an International Women’s Day. The proposal was unanimously agreed upon, and the first IWD was celebrated on March 19, 1911, before eventually being moved to March 8th.
Over the years, International Women’s Day has grown into a global day of recognition and celebration. It honors the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women while calling for mindfulness and the continuing evolution women's rights. It’s a day to reflect on progress, advocate for change, and celebrate acts of courage and determination by ordinary women who have played extraordinary roles in the history of their countries and communities.
